K9 Dog Coat

U101 Design Thinking

About me

For the past six years, I have worked in the Voluntary Sector running a charity. The bits of my work that I love are being creative such as designing services that make a difference to families with young children and demonstrating their impact in compelling reports. When I am not doing that I’m singing, running, knitting or drawing. I never sit still!

How might we encourage people to take away their dog waste and dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way?

10.2 million families own a dog creating an estimated 1,133 tonnes of waste a day, most of which ends up in landfill. We all feel we are doing our bit by using biodegradable dog poo bags however, I discovered rubbish tips don’t create the right conditions to break down biodegradable bags and can even mummify them!

In researching this problem, I discovered two age old technologies coming together: gas lamps and bio-digesters that create gas from animal waste. Sight Designs developed a working prototype that turns dog waste in lamplight in the UK in 2019 and post-COVID, they are now ready to market K9, their bio-lantern.

I designed the dog coat to fit in with the bio-lantern system. The coat has a pocket to collect the waste to transport home to a bio-lantern. The “My Poo Powers” tagline, is a talking point with other dog walkers, raising awareness of the K9 system and the simple and effective way waste can be turned into something purposeful in an environmentally friendly way.
