The Postbox

Two single KALLAX units are placed diagonally creating a visually contrasting layout. Supported by a centre post leg. With KALLAX drawer inserts in each unit to offer storage options.

Design Principle: Post-modernism design: quirky, fun, playful, in a highly distinctive design.

Description: As part of TMA04 assignment the class were challenged to create 3-5 new products from existing IKEA products. Using the KALLAX cube units, I explored configurations using the grid method, and was drawn to the diagonal layout.

Using the experienced designers method of 1) Association, I thought of a metal post box. 2) Using 2d sketching & 3d modelling to generate my version of the Post Box.

Assessing against the five types of function:-

Technical Function: Two Kallax single cube end panels support the centre of an elevated single KALLAX cube. The top unit joins to the base single KALLAX unit with metal plate & screws, plus wood glue.

Aesthetics: The quirky design is eye-catching as a visual focal point. May evoke psycho-pleasure with a sense of intrigue or playfulness.

Sustainability: Reuse of KALLAX materials rather than buy new.

Usability: An unconventional approach to storing items.

Identity: The combination and connection between the KALLAX units creates a quirky and distinctive identity.
