Disposable nappies generate massive environmental waste because their complex, bonded composite materials are impossible to separate. This forces a linear cycle of take, make, dispose, driving up environmental guilt from parents and waste management costs for local councils. 

 

Little TearAways is a biomimetic, hybrid nappy system that breaks this dominant industry design. Joined by ultrasonic welds rather than chemical adhesives, the product allows users to separate the nappy into two distinct streams: a 100% recyclable, cotton-like PE outer shell and a 100% biodegradable inner pad.

The technical outer shell enters household dry recycling, while the soiled biological inner pad goes to general waste. The pad features a moisture-wicking wool fleece top, an antibacterial sphagnum moss core, and a sea-kelp bioplastic backsheet. A biomimetic lotus-leaf texture ensures containment, while a "fold and roll" design manages hygienic disposal. It offers a future-proof, closed-loop solution for a smooth transition should legislation change to include biohazards in household composting. Providing convenience and comparable cost to a standard disposable. 

My process began with constructive discontent during a visit to a Suffolk recycling facility. Hearing the workers’ frustration over nappy contamination inspired me to investigate why parents mistakenly recycle them. I conducted a full Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) on standard disposables, which proved that their chemically bonded, inseparable materials make them impossible to recycle. 

Inspired by the sustainable disruption in the feminine hygiene sector, I wanted to create a parallel behavioural shift in infant care. Little TearAWays is a hybrid of three ideas: biomimicry, inspiration from other sectors, and building on the ideas of others.

Based in Essex and a parent to two university students, my goal during this module was to master circular design. After graduation, I aspire to train as a Design and Technology teacher to inspire the next generation of eco-conscious innovators.
