Space Oddity

A space to immerse yourself in a chosen activity

Project Detail

My shed is a space that becomes a place that gives freedom to immerse yourself in a chosen activity. The shed sits on stilts and is situated surrounded by trees and nature. The boulder stilts connect the shed to the ground, connecting humans and nature whilst giving them ownership of their own the space. With no windows and doors visible it resembles a cardboard box. Like the cardboard box the shed is designed for fun and to be a box of possibilities, only limited by the imagination of the user.

The shed is accessed by a loft ladder which when inside can be closed so that the user is cut off from reality, leaving unwanted distractions behind.

Inside the whole interior including walls, ceiling and furniture is all made of rough plywood. This blank canvas that is already imperfect is an invitation to make mess, mistakes and explore.

Internal views of the space showing large storage cupboards including one with a sink and annotation suggesting this can be used for photography. Another annotation shows part of the space is not yet in use. Another skech shows someone seated at a modular desk cube. An image of the roof shows solar panels and a roof window. A floor plan shows nesting boxes built into the outside of the building. The boulder support legs are annoated to show that they are created like this to enable insects to use them as habitat.

Shown with the window shutter closed and the loft style stairs up. This is to show how it would look when stumbled upon, an intriguing structure with no obvious entrance or purpose. It is also shown with both windows and shutters open which transforms the building form a cardboard box into something that resembles a tree house. The windows when completely open retract into the walls fully, giving the illusion there are no windows.

About me

I went back to University having last studied 20 years ago in a subject that did not interest me, this time deciding to do something that I love. U101 was the first module that I completed and T190 the second.
