'The Nest'

Project Detail
‘The Nest’ is a freestanding, single-storey timber structure designed to mitigate Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) through an adaptable, sensory-led environment that accommodates the contrasting symptoms of winter and spring SAD.

Utilising a curvilinear geometry to eliminate harsh corners, this organic form builds psychological comfort. The design is rooted in biophilic design principles, technically proven to aid in stress reduction and emotional regulation. Interior features reinforce this therapeutic intent. The textured rug is complemented by a curved sofa and a cocoon-like armchair designed to reduce sensory overstimulation.

Large windows provide winter solar gain and function as acoustic funnels to capture external auditory stimuli, while blackout curtains manage intense spring light. To maximise winter daylight, a neutral, high Light Reflective Value (LRV) palette amplifies illumination, paired with nature-inspired, 3D-printed fixtures diffusing glare-free light. Indoor flora improves air quality, while the pivot door ensures seasonal tranquillity.

To communicate this vision, I applied generative AI to develop the curved exterior as a structural base, printing this template at A3 scale to physically collage interior furnishings by hand and experiment with spatial volume.

Grounded in human-nature interaction, this design aligns with Gaston Bachelard’s theory that small, enclosed settings can evoke a sense of vastness. By providing an enveloping sensation for psychological grounding, the pod-like geometry transforms this simple structure into a protective home, acting as a comforting threshold between the inhabitant and the surrounding ecosystem.
