"The weight of wanting"
Album Cover Design for Hotel California by Eagles
Julio Cesar Sierra Zarate
Project Detail
My first ideas and approaches for developing a project with these characteristics were, for the most part, more figurative and illustrative. To explore these ideas, I sketched several drawings and presented them during the project review, which turned out to be very important for me. In some way, the feedback I received broadened my perspective and helped me search for the most effective way to express the design problem I was facing.
I chose the song Hotel California because of its social message regarding an issue that affects countless people: consumerism. I used the metaphor of the hotel, along with the final line of the song — "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave" — as the main source of inspiration for this design.
The composition contains circles of different colors and sizes. The larger and more visually attractive circles represent consumerism itself, symbolizing the moment of consumption. The smaller colored circles represent the renewed desire to consume once again. The gray and dark circles, together with the background, represent the darker consequences of uncontrolled consumerism.

The process evolved through hand-made sketches combined with digital treatment. Feedback and new perspectives led me to experiment with the details needed to effectively communicate the message of the song, which I believe successfully fulfills both the project brief and my personal way of expressing this issue.

About me
My main goal in pursuing these studies has been, and will continue to be, to understand the systems, standards, and principles of design in order to develop projects focused on meeting individual and collective needs.
