Stray Cats Untamed
Image and Layout Design

Project Detail
Ideas derived from listening to music by the Stray Cats and doodling the project start page, whilst having a Sphynx cat sitting on my shoulder. The music has a 1950s Rockabilly, Punk, and Western influence. This motivated my interest in stylized, abstract shapes and feline graphics of the era, the cat's eyes appeared very dominant in black and white.
I would follow this theme as a focal point. The theme fitted the band name and cat references within their songs. The cover had a slightly sinister undertone, complementing the bad boy band image. The name of the album became clear, Untamed, the revival, or the last album. Reminding fans, the band grew up but still portrayed the rebellious youth of the day and the spirit is still within them as performers.

I explored layout principles, using a layout grid. I wasn’t too concerned about the gutter or margin space initially in rough work, it could be rectified in digital software.
I chose to deviate with the lettering of ‘arts' next to the ‘C’ shape. This gave a subtle sign of being uncoordinated, not conforming, out of place, portraying that rebellious theme. The Untamed title was constructed from magazine cut outs, not quite as harsh as the original Drunken Hour font but agreeable.

I have learned to communicate and experience the concept of
collaborative input and feedback. A valued insight into a design process. I find tutorials highly informative and alongside project reviews a thorough source to contact cohorts and my tutor. I have learned that in product, service design or whatever it’s not about drawing pretty pictures, but designing with others in
mind and not what you want to design on a personal level.
