Motion Sensor and Flashing Warning Light Pad
Cesaltina Gomes Vaz Oliveira
Problem Statement
The project was developed to address a safety issue in my house. The bathroom door opens outwards into a narrow corridor that is frequently used to access the bedrooms, living room, and bathroom. This creates a risk of collision between someone opening the bathroom door and another person passing through the corridor. As children run and play throughout the house, the chances of an accident increase. This design would benefit other settings with a similar door system.
Description of the Project
My design consists of two wireless devices: a motion sensor and a flashing warning light pad. The motion sensor would be mounted above the living room doorway using double-sided adhesive. When movement is detected, the sensor sends a signal to the flashing warning light pad located inside the bathroom. The pad emits a bright flashing light, alerting the bathroom user that someone may be approaching and encouraging them to open the door cautiously. The system aims to reduce the risk of accidents and improve safety.

The process involved observing movement and identifying potential hazards associated with the outward-opening door. Several concepts were generated; however, this ranked higher because it addressed the problem more effectively. Sketching played an important role throughout the process, helping to develop and communicate the design.
