Flatback Earring Holder

Claudia Greenfield

Project Description

The project is to create a product which overcame problems in our day. Some days I want to change out my flatback earrings, where I use a tool which uses metallic prongs that pinch my ears and is hard to grip for a long period of time.

My problem statement is ‘How might we come up with a tool to help remove flatback piercings more easily without pinching the ear or causing finger pain?’

The holder does this by inserting the triangular section around the earring, where the user can push the slider and lock it into place. This will move one of the ends to grip the earring, where the user can either pull or rotate the holder until the desired process is done. The slider is then moved back down, releasing the grip on the earring.

I picked multiple things that affect me in my daily life and came up with the grabber tool. I found three existing solutions, then went into a planning session with other people to come up with design ideas and ways to fix the initial problem. I made the design online and 3D printed the prototype to be able to grip the holder to find any changes.

Images of a 3D printed tool - there is a v shaped part which goes around the earring and a slider moves a flat plate to hold the earring in place.

About me

I am currently doing my degree whilst working full-time. In the future, I hope to get a job incorporating a mix of designing and engineering.
