Design Brief

Design a board game based on a service.

"Hey Taxi" is a board game designed for players of all ages and an ideal family game. The aim of the game is for the players to become cab drivers in London and earn money through picking up fares but they can lose money by receiving penalties. The idea behind the game was to teach children the idea of mathematics, money management and how the black cab service works.

Description of the Project

Hey Taxi! board game components: board, cards, and playing pieces

Round wooden table with twelve chairs

One player is nominated as a banker who is responsible for paying money in/out money and handing the float. The youngest player rolls the dice first to start the game. If you land on a square that says DROP OFF then you will have gained a fare and will collect money. If you land on a square that says PAY! you must pay the penalty stated on the square. If you lose all your money, you are bankrupt and out of the game. The winner of the game is the last player left with money or the player with the most amount of money when the game ends (game ending can be decided by the players).

The game detail shows the components of the game such as the board itself, the meeples and the pretend money. The most important decision I made in the game design was using mini cars as meeples instead of basic counters. This made the game fun and related to the theme/service as the black car looked like a black cab which fitted in with the chosen service.

About me

I have always had an interest in Design and for my 40th birthday I made the decision to return to studying after 22 years. I enrolled on the BA Hons Design and Innovation degree with the plan to go into teaching once I complete my degree. I am a mother to two teenage daughters who are my inspiration behind wanting to be successful in my learning journey. My dream is to be able to teach children about the importance of how innovation is never-ending in the world of design.
