Design Problem

This is a project I worked on for my TMA02 assignment, in which I had to create a prototype based on a chosen problem statement, mine being: “Design a solution to tackle the issue of light pollution created from street lamps outside of residential homes negatively impacting sleep.”

My proposed solution is a drone, which is placed in residential streets, and is only activated when it detects the motion of someone in the street. It can then follow them, providing a direct light source, whilst also monitoring via CCTV in the case of a medical emergency, a crime being committed etc, in which it would then contact the relevant authorities. The need for street lamps, therefore, would be eliminated.

Description of the Project

Hand-held cardboard drone model projecting light
Cardboard model satellite with solar panels

In brainstorming this idea, I held a creative session with family, where many ideas were put forward. I ranked my ideas and selected this one based on its relevance to modern life, as well as its potential to provide a new, sustainable solution to local council’s where energy consumption is vastly reduced in their streets.
