Design Brief

Design a board game based  on a service.

My game design was inspired by the prison service, it is a ‘roll-and-move’ board game titled ‘Cell Block Bonanza’. A 4-player game designed for ages 10-12+, with the users playing as inmates in prison and their objective, to escape whilst evading capture from the warden. The warden is not assigned to a separate player, rather it is controlled by the other players and able to move freely across the board. Players begin from their assigned corner of the board, titled ‘Cell Block A/B/C/D’ and must follow their lane to reach the finish.

Description of Game

Round wooden table with twelve chairs

Players roll with two different coloured dice simultaneously, one assigned to the inmates and the other to the warden, the number each dice lands on determines how many squares the player and warden moves. Players can choose which course they wish to take for the warden which is where the fun lies! Landing on a multicoloured square allows the warden to change lanes.

If an inmate lands on a ‘Gavel’, ‘Scales of Justice’, or ‘Spotlight’ square, they must pick up the corresponding card and do as it says. If you win an ‘Explosion Token’, you pick any of the 3D pieces and place it at your nearest intersecting square which blocks the warden’s path for the duration of the game. If the warden lands on you, you get sent back to the start. The first player to the finish, breaks out and wins the game!

About me

Wanting to make a new start in life, I turned to the OU and decided to enrol and take this new path. I very much enjoy being creative which led me to choose U101 as my first module and I am glad for the experience. I wish to achieve a sense of pride in myself after graduation, having been dealing with depression for most of my life.
