Day Tripper

Nathan Bolland

Day Tripper is a multifunctional beach seat buggy designed to streamline a  beach visit by combining transport, storage, seating, and shade into a single, compact solution.

Design Problem

Beachgoers often struggle with carrying multiple items like chairs, umbrellas, bags, and more across uneven terrain like sand. This can be physically demanding and inconvenient, particularly for families or elderly individuals. My design addresses this problem by integrating essential beach gear into a single, easy-to-transport unit.

The buggy features a foldable handle that doubles as a stand, collapsible side panels for travel storage, and a UV blocking canopy that shelters a double seating area. Integrated into the canopy is a solar panel and battery pack allowing users to charge USB devices. The buggy fits easily into a car boot and transforms quickly between transport and seating modes.

Day Tripper: Compact, deployable trailer designs

I began by researching common challenges faced at the beach through user surveys and observational studies and from that created the research infographic. I sketched ideas, then I decided to create a 3D prototype. With limited prior experience in 3D modelling, I found the free web app Tinkercad to be the most accessible tool and allowed me to build the model and create variations to explore how it would perform under different conditions.

I’m a graphic designer who enrolled in U101, with the goal of branching out into other areas of design. I’m hoping to use these new skills to enhance and expand the services I offer.
